My First International Customer!!!

Quite an event for Dartmoor IT - I have had the pleasure of assisting Jess in Australia with getting her Auntie Hazel who lives in Torquay her first laptop and getting her online. Hazel can now chat with Jess and the others using Skype and they can email each other messages (and send photos).

For me, this is a great example of how computers can enhance our lives and bring us closer to the people we care about, no matter where they are.

I spent a little time showing Hazel the basics and she knows she can contact me again, if she wants or needs to learn more. Hazel is newly retired and I suspect that she may find her laptop and internet access useful if she wants to take up new hobbies & activities.

However, if she just ends up using it to keep in touch with her family & friends, I think it will still be very worthwhile, for that purpose alone.

Feb 2011 - Mac Users

I can now support and train Mac users, as well as those who use Windows & Linux. I now use a macbook myself and can now see why it is the system of choice for so many people. However, I am continuing to use Windows & Linux too as I want to keep up my skills in all of the major computer operating systems.

So, if you require either IT Support or basic training on your Mac, please do get in touch. I would be delighted to hear from you.

Can't Afford To Get Online???

I realise that computing is expensive to get into. However, an older computer can do everything that most people need and it is not necessary to go out and spend hundred's of pounds. When people upgrade their older computer and buy a newer model, they often have no use for the older machine and it just sits in the corner of the room, gathering dust.

Web sites such as freecycle often advertise these unwanted PC's. I have obtained some of these older PC's and will be setting them up to provide "starter" machines for people who cannot afford the initial outlay of purchasing a new one.

Free Event - South Tawton

Free Computer Awareness Events At South Tawton

In all, about 15 people attended these free events. They aimed to equip people with the knowledge and skills necessary to choose / purchase a new computer and to get online. I covered a number of topics including :

What a computer is
What people commonly use a computer for (and how)
What equipment is needed and what are the choices - possible costs
What software is and about all the sources of great free software
What you need to know about getting online and ordering a broadband service
Staying safe online

Feedback was very good. I am confident that, as a result, some of the people who attended will get online in the near future.
